Well done. Thank you so much for going without food and keeping quiet - you're a bunch of superstars!

Why did Jesus die?

We told the Easter story using the wonderful Brick Testament pictures, then discussed two theories of why Jesus had to die. The first was 'to pay a penalty' - the idea that God demands perfection of us, which we can never realistically achieve, so we are all destined for life in Hell. Jesus lived a perfect life, so he was able to die in our place to make God happy with us.

The alternative theory was that Jesus died 'to restore the world'. Resulting from Adam and the fall in the Garden of Eden (whatever that means exactly - another time...) people are born separated from God, not able to relate to him. This has led to all sorts of evil and mess in the world. Jesus came to sort out the mess, to restore people's relationships to God, and this culminated in his death and resurrection (also in a garden) which somehow broke the power of death. Now, people can choose to be close to God again. When eventually we are resurrected as well, we will have lost all traces of our messed up lives too.

We also made Easter cards, and decorated plaster of paris egg fridge magnets.

To finish, everyone wrote a thank-you to Jesus on a large cardboard cross.

Help! Church makes me yawn

Tonight we thought about church - how it needs to have at its core those things that Jesus valued highly - being kind to others, acting justly and being humble. We decided church also needs to have an accessible style to be appealing to all ages.

We were really impressed with the quality of the discussion - it's obviously a topic that you have lots of ideas about.

So now it's over to you again for this weeks' airborne challenge. Let us know what changes you would make to our services in the Crewe Methodist Circuit to make them more appealing to you as young people. You can leave messages here on the blog, email us your ideas or write them down and bring them next week.

Illustration challenge

Whether we're emo, princesses or chavs, what we choose to wear doesn't change the fact that we're all God's kids. That means we should try and be kind and loving to others. This week's challenge is to illustrate this verse from Colossians 3:12-13:

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Teen Culture

Last night we looked at various youth sub-cultures: goths, surfers, geeks, emos, metal-heads, chavs, skaters, indie kids & pink princesses.

We thought about how teens are encouraged to choose a sub-culture to belong to and how marketers cleverly gear their products to make money from these groups.

We discussed the pros and cons of belonging to a youth sub-culture. Pros included: a sense of belonging & just enjoying being a teen. Cons included: wanting stuff you don't need just because it's marketed to your group and sometimes limiting the types of people you hang out with.

We ended by remembering that as Christians we are part of God's own sub-culture as he loves us just the same whether we're goths, chavs or princesses!

We then made Mother's Day cards with little books attached, containing reasons why we love our mums and vouchers offering help that she can claim as gifts. From what I could spot over your shoulders last night, there'll be quite a few runwayers helping get the tea in a few weeks time! :o)
